The original subject was "Re: IH R 505 hay rake on steel".

RE 1950"s vintage IH 4 bar side delivery rake with R505 on the gearbox. I have one of these rakes that I use every season to do about 16 acres of hay. I am in need if a right front wheel. Does anyone have a parts rake that I could buy a wheel off of or know where I could get one? Thanks

What is wrong with your present wheel? Could it be repaiable? Most wheels will be slightly bent and not hurt anything. And if you actually need a wheel do you need the steel tire model and if that the narrow or whide version? Or do you need the version for rubber tires? I know of some of those. Friend has a pair, tire condition unknown. Steel would be harder to come up with as they are what is desired here and very few of the wider tire muck versions still. I gave JR Sutton information in his getting his running. I have not been able to do it but that Friend has semi straightened several as the steel is all they will use. Is you wheel bent enough that it hits the frame? I would have to do some checking but I think both are same and bent wheel could be swaped to left side and straight wheel put on right side and work. And the right wheel is usually the one to get bent as it is more likely to hit something. I have rebuilt several of them over the last several years. In the last 10 years I probly have handled 40-50 or more of the steel wheel rakes of all makes. I have 4 New Idea rakes setting here right now for me to rebuild and on some of them I will have to substitute parts of the frame fron a parted out unit. Have parts of McCormic, Deere and Case here as well that have been striped for parts but no McCormick wheels. Deere and Case yes but no McCormic. I have all the dealer parts books for all the above rakes.

I should have said that is only a part number. The model of your rake is simply called a 4 bar enclosed gear hay rake, nothing else. And built 1940 to 1958.

The wheel originally had a rubber tire. The rim rusted away about 10 years ago and wouldn't hold a tire so we made a solid wooden wheel out of 2x10's resembling a Roman cart wheel and u bolted it to the wheel spokes. It has lasted the 10 years but the spokes are now bending and breaking and the old tire rim is catching the frame and stopping the wheel. If Friend has a wheel I don't care what shape the tires are in. The tire on the left side wheel has failed about 3 years ago and we gorilla tape wrapped the flat tire round and round through the spokes and it is doing well. We didn't think of that 10 years ago with the right wheel or it would probably be in usable shape yet. The rake looks just like the one that Sutton refurbished. So bottom line, I need a wheel just like he has in his photo. Thanks for your reply.

OK, Now the next question is where are you located? the Wheels are at Berne, Indiana. So would you be able to pick up or find a way to have shipped? The Friend is Amish so he has no phone and I only use in emergency due to hearing problems. So email to me is best. [email protected] Lester (Leroy) Helmlinger, Wapakoneta, Ohio.
