Baling Straw

Which round balers are the best at baling straw, especially difficult stuff from a rotary combine. The old JD 535 just ain't doing it. Soft core types work but would really like hard core bales. You experiences please.

A JD 535 will bale fine straw IF you have the viable core kit installed. This keeps the pressure on the belts low until you have a good core started and then it will increase the pressure to normal. Once you have a bale started you usually have little trouble until you start the next bale.

I have JD 567 and 568 balers with the variable core on them. We bale fine cut straw without much problem. IF you still having trouble bale at night. When the straw is just a little tough it will feed in better.

Here is what the kit looks like.

Even die hard JD guys here in NY are using NH balers, round and square, to bale everything. I've had three different people bale straw behind my rotary combine, and all used NH.

As JD seller said it helps to go when the straw is a bit tougher, another trick I have used is to ease the PTO speed back but keep your ground speed up in order to "flood" the pickup.Once you have the bale started you can run at normal speed again. I have been in fields where a Gleaner combine was working and the NH baler was parked and the Deere baler was working :)
Still hard to beat a green baler in my book

Thanks for the input guys. I think we're looking at Hesston 956. Guys we talked to say will bale most anything. Any input on them?

Update: Went with the Hesston 956, Totally impressed. Bales anything behind any combine. Have baled barley straw from both JD and NH, and wheat straw from NH. If the machine stands up well, we'll be happy.
