Gehl Shredder knives needed

Hello-

I am looking for some knives for an old Gehl green chopper. It is a model SA-21. This uses the same knife as the Gehl Clean-Cut model CC-60. These were the cut and throw style chopper/shredders that pre-date the modern flail choppers such as the Gehl model 72 and 7200. Made around 1960. The Gehl part number for the knife I need is R13023. Gehl number R13023-A, R13023-B, and R13023-C ARE NOT what I need, these are the J-shaped blades for the modern 72 and 7200 flail choppers. It is about 2.25" square and has a knife edge on both sides as it is reversible. I will post some pictures. If there are any old Gehl dealers in your area let me know. Have only found 6 knives so far, I need 30. Have already checked the Parts Depot, they have none. Any help would be great. Please see pictures of blade and machine below. Thanks!

-Jesse

I have a CC60 that I no longer use for this same
reason. It's really too bad, I love the way it
mowed. The teeth are worn to nothing, and a
few have been lost which has now thrown it out
of balance. As a matter of fact, when I had a
little more time this winter, I was going to lift it
up and take pictures of the underside of it and
post them on here and see if anyone had any
ideas on retrofitting modern style flail knives on
it. I by no means looked as hard as you for
teeth, I just had the part number and called a
few old Gehl dealers around me, they all said
"no longer available, we don't have any". I also
Googled the part number with no luck there
either. I would really like to get my CC60 back
operating again, actually totally rebuild it, as I
just love it to pull behind a small tractor with no
3 PT or hydraulics. I would use it to break in
fresh rebuilds on smaller tractors as it would
really work them. Maybe someone else on here
can help us, as this is the only flail style mower
I have ever owned/used/worked on, so I really
don't know a whole lot about flail teeth or the
means of attaching them. I did however used to
be a welder/fabricator, so any of that would be
no problem.

Ross-

Thanks for the reply. I know what you mean by the power consumption. I am running mine with a Farmall 450, which is close to 55hp and it really works it good. In thick stuff I have to go in lowest gear. I think a guy could easily fabricate the blades, but you would have to get them heat treated to harden them or they would wear out very fast. Going to keep calling more Gehl dealers, maybe I will get lucky, but I doubt I will find the 30 total blades I need. If you ever part out your CC-60 let me know. 608-346-4088. Thanks!

Google yellow stone imp in Stanley wi
it's like walking back into 60s 70s old
style holland and gehl signs still
hanging brochures from the 70s and 80s
still on the wall. He still has a pile of
no Allis imp parts and one corner in shop
is full of gehl stuff. I make no promises
but he's the first place I try and rarely
leave empty handed. I'm milking now but
later if you need the number I'll post
it.

Former Gehl dealer down the road had none left. Checked with a guy that bought out a bunch of parts from the former Gehl dealer across the river that closed up this spring and he didn't have any either. Wonder if you could take the old ones and build the ends back up with weld and then sharpen them? Not talking about welding pieces on, that is a no-no, but just adding metal with hardface rod. should still be able to sharpen with a grinder and they should wear well. Balancing could be an issue, though.

Tim-

I guess hard surfacing buildup may work. I only need to build it up about 1/4-3/8". Then regrind to a cutting edge. Thanks for checking dealers near you.

For what it's worth, this is what I wonder:

Knowing how equipment manufacturers like to recycle designs and parts, I wonder if your little blades have the same thickness and depth (distance from sharpened point to sharpened point) as Gehl chopper knives from that same period?

Would chopper knives be easier to find?

If the dimensions were the same, a metal shop might be able to cut a chopper knife into the little lengths to match the blades that you have and broach/punch the square holes.

Another option might be onlinemetal.com? A friend of mine had them make a bunch of brackets to rebuild a wagon. He had about forty little brackets cut to the proper dimension and drilled and simply shipped to him. You pay for the metal by the square inch. Drilling and such are practically free. If I remember correctly, they stock tool steel and other hardened steels that would hold an edge.

Philosophically, I think that green chop is about THE most underappreciated/utilized method of forage management. I can't count the number of times, in the last ten years of running our own little herd, that I wished that I had a working flail chopper or a machine like you have.

Good luck.

If I can find some decent used for would

wi red dairy man-

Thanks for all the help! I wouldn't mind having used knives if they have some life left in them. Also, would like to find a few spare arms that they bolt to in case I lose or break one. See what he says about the one in the woods. Where are you located in WI? I am in Waupaca. Will also try Chili Implement. Thanks!

I'll check with neighbor and see what he
says on selling some pieces. I'm east of
eau claire buddy of mine used to truck
farm machinery scrap from the yards over
here to a mill over by you. I'll keep
searching to I enjoy the hunt do you have
an email?

Email is [email protected]. Called Chili implement this morning, no luck but they gave me the name and number of a guy in Abbotsford that may have something.

I might know of a place that might have or be able to make new ones. I haven't delt with them, friend-neighbor told me about them, cannot remember Name of place but local machinery dealer go there for all their mower knives. Place is about 7 mile from me. If you want me to check let me know.

Leroy-

Thanks for the info. If you happen to go that way ask them if they have any. Don't make a special trip. I can get these made locally, but getting them hardened is the tough part. I doubt mild steel will hold up very long.

-Jesse

Will just have to ask friend the name again then you can find them on the net and go from their.

If you have them made locally, I would have the ship make them out of something like S7 tool steel. It's very tough and holds and edge well when hardened. It's an air hardening tool steel so it's fairly easy to do with a torch.

Another option would be D2. Again, air hardening and tough.

I have the name here, Lacal Equipment, 901 W Pike St, Jackson Center, Oh 45334 937-596-6106 Look them up on the web and then give them a call. Mower knives are their bussiness and they make the aftermarket knives the dealers sell. They would have no problem with hardness.

Thanks Don and Leroy for the steel advice and Lacal lead. I will give Lacal a call on Monday.
