john deere 40 w/#9 sickle bar mower question #3

all previous questions have been answered and followed to produce a fine combo of the JD 40U and the JD #9 sickle mower and thank you for that, however one more question....

as i pull the bar up for travel and not mowing the blades slide down and stick in the dirt, there must be some kind of bracket the holds the blades in place while traveling, thanks again for all the help

When you are "traveling" with your mower, is the mower disengaged or engaged?

If the mower is disengaged, then is it in vertical position or horizontal position?

There should be a tab on the inner shoe hold down plate, and a protrusion on the pitman stick end that prevents that drop when the cutter bar is vertical. one or both of those tabs may be missing on your mower. The tab on the hold down was broken off on my #8, and a new plate fixed the problem.

There is supposed to be a tab on one of the drive head hold down plates to keep the section bar from dropping. That system is marginal for keeping the bar up. I find a short piece of a tree branch and stick it between two guards and jam it into the section knifes enough to get some bite so it stays put. Then the section bar doesn't drop.

I would travel vertically disengaged only would engage while mowing however because of my problem i have been traveling with bar in horizontal until i put a strap to hold it up, does anyone have a picture of the clasp that would hold it in place? i did think about a chunk of wood also

thanks dave

Thanks for your reply.

Agree with both [b:654c4848f0]ET[/b:654c4848f0] and [b:654c4848f0]Shetland Sheepdog[/b:654c4848f0] on the mower parts.

Take a look at the diagram below.

Note the rear guide (Key 3) [b:654c4848f0]Z 9611 H[/b:654c4848f0].

This rear guide is "common" for the No. 5, 8, 8W, 9, 9W, 37, 38, 39, and 39N mowers.

Take a look at the diagram below.

If these OEM parts don't work for you, then try a wooden block.

Hope this helps.

While trying to get a photo for my reply, discovered that the rear guard on 3 of our No. 5 mowers was on backwards.

Also discovered that the rear guard was missing on the No. 5 mower with the wooden block.

Guess all of us learned something.
