Pitman stick revisited

I finally got time to change the broken pitman stick out on my sickle mower. As someone suggested on here, you need to tighten the bolts once in a while. They already have lock nuts on all of the bolts. The new stick was $27.00 from the local IH dealer. I have to go back and get the spring that goes in the sickle end as it fell out when it broke. It just pulled the bolts right out of the end of it. Lesson learned.

I have seen that due to many reasons. Hitting to big a tree will also cause that to happen or hitting a fence will cause that as will the bolt not tight. Don't ask how I know about that LOL. Have a JD #9 sitting here that I let a friend use and he did that and I have yet to find the parts I need to go back on the sickle bar since he lost that part when it pull out of the stick

I used to have a Ford sickle bar mower. The pitman arm on that had a couple of pieces of metal strapping on it. The way your picture is oriented, one was on top, one was on the bottom, and there were two little bolts that went through them to hold them in place. I considered them sort of like an anti-split device. If you have room for it, you could fabricate your own from some metal, small bolts and a drill.

Each time I store my old mower I coat the bar and blade good with used oil.
Always wipe down the wooden pitman, the wood absorbs the oil. Machine is always stored in side.

Use lock tight on the bolts

Old cutter machines are like a combine, always trying to shake themselves apart, must be properly looked after.
