vermeer 605K

I recently purchased a 1996 605K. I was told the airbags and cylinders were all in working order. My problem is that I can't get a bale to roll up nice and tight. I have the air in high blue to start, but can only get the hydraulic into mid red when the bale is done. I have turned the hydraulic adjustment knob all the way to the right, but have no luck increasing the bale tightness. What should the air pressure be if I were to put a gauge on the lines instead of going by color? OR am I even going in the right direction by checking this out first?

Check your belt length. It sounds like the tension system is working but the belts stretch and they will not be as tight as they should. I ran Vermeer balers for years. I resized the belts every year. If you went longer they could easily be two feet too long and make a crappy bale.

Also what type of hay are you rolling???? If it is real dry grass it will not be a rock hard bale. They would not make them quite as tight as the newer balers would.

I will check that out. Thanks for the insight. I am rolling up prairie hay which is dry, but bales seem to settle more than they should after setting for a day or two.
