I am working on a JD #10 sickle mower and when I remove the hold down clips some of the wear plates have a shim on top of them. What is the purpose of the shim? When should the wear plates be replaced? Does the thickness of the wear plates determine how close the shear runs to the guard plate?

Thanks

Bob

The shim is to raise the hold down clip enough for the sections to slide "smoothly" between the wear plate and the hold down clip. To decrease clearance, most guys hit the clip with a BFH.

Replace the wear plate when the leading edge is half worn away.

I douse my cutter bar with old crankcase oil after changing knives, and run it slowly. Tells you "by ear" which clips are too tight or too loose.

Sight along the tips of the guards. Often one gets bent up after hitting a rock and puts upward pressure on the knife and raises it off the ledger plates. BFH

Check if the outer shoe has shims to align the outer ledger plate with the outer section.

And make sure the knife back is straight and not bowed from the end hitting a post, tree, or something unmovable. Can't have much of a bow in it.
