3 point john deere #9 sickle bar mower

what horse power would be not enough for this implement? seems like any of the n series could power this, AC "B"? farmall "C"?

thanks dave

If it a 7' bar, any of those tractors will power it. If a 9' bar and tough grass, they will get a workout!

7 foot bar and will be used to cut around a stream and pond, so it won't be bar full of vegetation, i like the n series around the pond, they sit low, thanks for the response

Hope this helps.

Ran one for several years with an 8N. Did a great job. I did rig a chain system to hold it up when the pto was off with the bar raised.

Unless modified the A/C B or the Farmall C does not have a 3 point so will not work one. 8N will but maybe a tad on the low side of the HP for it.

The No. 5 was the 7' semi mounted mower while the Number 9 is a 3 point hitch mower. That inself will not make a difference in power to operate. Deere advertised the No. 5 to be used with the H tractor that had a tested belt HP of 14.8 horsepower or 10 horse under a ford N series. And we pulled the Oliver version 3 point 7' mounted with a 2N for years and road gear was correct gear for mowing with that outfit.

Leroy, the #5 pre-dated the #9 by DECADES.
To keep it in the same era, the #8 was the semi-mounted companion to the 3-point #9.

Yes but the power to operate did not change and that is what I was talking about. So those tractors would have had plenty of power. And 2 head of hores would pull a 7' bar mower. And that Deere tractor was rated to due the work of 3 head of horses, A N series rated same way would be either 4 or 6 head. So the tractors mentioned AC or IHC would have had plenty of power to pull a mower like that All in about the 20 horse range and I pulled a 7' mower with my 20 HP Deere B with no problems. Anybody that has power problems with a N series Ford has other problems.
