what is the rule on reel speed /?? ,conditions make all the difference in the world ...it seems in some perfect conditions. I can gear up and match ground speed to reel speed ,.. but in heavy understory the grass just paks up on the swath board and I must gear down to a crawl to save the reel, chains , belt ect ... damp conditions are a reel pain ,,. this has been a mostpeculiar year ,,,still doing 1st cut ,,.constant rain , and family issues kept me from getting done in june ,.. I am using decent 1190 ihc ,, pretty good machine , sadly it never been under a roof ,. and rust is common ,,, I have toyed with the variable speed and made some improvements ,,just don't like the reel spinning like its about to fly away , I like it better than nh 492 -89 ,except I did not have trouble keeping the back board cleared on the nh ,, I intend to paint the swath board with graphite paint when season is done ,,

reel speed should be set so it is turning a little faster than your ground speed, just enough to wipe the hay off the cutter bar before it builds up. What brand of machine do you have?
