New Holland Balers

I have been messing with IH balers but parts are hard to find (especially for a wire tie) and I'm think about switching to a New Holland and selling my wire tie while it is still a good working baler. I'm also occassionally catching flack from my horse hay buyers because they are wire tired bales (I guess they don't know you take the wire off).

Of the 267-276 New Holland balers which is the newest (or what are the years) and which are the higher capacity models? Any one of these you would stay away from?

Local New Holland dealership has a GOOD baler man, local John Deere dealership charges $120 an hour for their guys to learn how to work on square balers.

The way I understand the numbering system is the bigger the number the newer the baler is. I have a 271 and a 68 and the 68 is the older of the 2.

The NH 276 is one of the BEST square balers made, period!!!! LOL I currently own TWO. The one I use and a practically new one for when the other one is worn out. The NH 276 had a faster plunger speed so you will get more flakes per minute than with many other balers. It also has a nice TALL open pickup. I used one for years and When it was worn clear out I traded it in for a NEW NH 316. I only kept that baler one season. The NH 316 was supposed to replace the NH 276. The trouble was they shorted the height of the chamber above the pickup. So in BIG windrows of straw the baler would not take in the straw like the NH 276 would. So I sold the NH 316 and found a good NH 276. I found another real clean one here 5-6 years ago and bought it for a backup.

The NH 276 was made from 1971 to 1976. The NH 315 replaced it, from 1977 to 1982. Then they came out with the NH 316 in 1982 -1988. Then the NH 565 came out in 1989 through 2008

Ronnie,I dissagree about the 276...The inline (CIH 8530) is the best small square . It's the greatest!!!!!!! LOL.I was never happier to get rid of my NewHolland balers(282,283,425......).The 276 IS a great baler, all jokes aside.... :)

I agree with JDSeller. 276 is a great old baler. Lots of them around still. I saw 5 or 6 go through the auctions this spring. But I have one, didn't need another.

I wouldn't be too hung up on what color the baler is if you find a good one. My preference would be on the inline Hesston/CaseIH models... although I run a Deere and find that to be a decent baler. I don't find the Deere to be much in the capacity department but they will make a solid bale.
So if I was you I'd find the best of the litter that you can find, buy the books for it and have your NH dealer work on it if he does your work for you. A good baler man can work on pretty well any baler. They're all more or less the same when you get right down to it.

I agree on the 276 as well, I have 3 of them, one I use, one I picked up as a backup, and a parts machine. The first one I bought is the now parts machine. it was rough, but did work for awhile, enough to convince me I liked it.
