3pt disc mower vs. discbine

looking into getting a new mowing machine right off. other than the hay needs a little more drying time with the 3pt unit, what are the pros and cons to the 3pt mower? do any of you use one to mow hay with yourselves? i used one for a whole summer and liked it pretty well. but thats the only experience i have with one. thanks for any input.

I have used both a Vicon disc mower and a Lely (Vermeer in The US ) MoCo both were 2.4 m ( 8 feet wide) behind a Massey 168 tractor with no problems whatsoever.

I bought a Massey 1362 disc mower (same as Fella, 11.5' foot cut) this spring, cut 160 acres each crop with it. I thought it would take longer to dry but it was the same as when I cut with the 499 NH, good rolls in the NH too. I cut one afternoon, leave it a day then rake the morning after that and go bale dry hay in the afternoon, same as I have done for years with the 499.

thats good to know. i was considering buying this type just to speed up the mowing process. thanks guys.

I had that Vicon that I took the rolls out of last year just after I bought it. I'd always thought it would be OK to go back to no conditioner. I was wrong. If you have a tedder maybe, but to just cut it,then wait for it to get dry enough to rake,it didn't work for me at all. Depends on what part of the country you're in and what kind of hay you grow I guess.

im in maine. we have to teddar everything here. ive done it before with the 3pt mower but only because i had no choice at the time. hay dried fine far as i could tell i couldnt see much if any differece between that and a conditioner. i suppose on a day that ends up being a questionable hay day after its already been cut could mean the difference.

I wasn't worried about it when I bought it cause I was going to wet wrap most of it, but like I said it dried fast, maybe just the year! I'm sure with this cooler weather my fourth cutting will take another day, but still had to do that with the haybine. I don't have a tedder, and I am in the southwest corner of Wisconsin.

You can also get the disc mowers with a conditioner, roller or finger, I think Krone has them and Massey has it available. I am sure there are other brands also.

I am in NH. I very rarely see a 3 pt disc mower. I used one for 3-4 years way back, but going to a mower conditioner did make a substantial difference in drying time. I think that the big thing is how much moisture is in your ground. This year has been about the driest ever so it would perhaps not make a big difference. In a wet year though, you are running behind because of waiting for three day windows, Your hay is getting thicker and taller, and the ground has a lot of moisture in it. In that situation you need both the crushing and the standing up that the MoCo gives the new cut grass, and the Tedder both. Over here we mow with our mowers tedd with our tedders and bale with our balers.

Mow grass hay with a 3pt discmower.

Record was baling hay less than 24 hours after mowed. Don't think a conditioner was going to speed it up.

Main advantage of 3pt, at least for me, is much smaller tractor needed to mow with, can't run a discbine powerwise, but can easily handle 3pt mower.

Biggest advantage? $$$$$

Brand new 3pt disc mower is fraction of price of brand new disc bine.

Mounted disc mower is somewhat cheaper to buy... it's also lighter and requires less power. I find the main advantage is that where it is lighter.... it deals better with rough uneven ground that will quickly destroy a discbine. Aside from that I don't see any advantages, money included. If you're cutting a thick tangled crop a discbine does a far superior job. In this climate it gains you better than a day of drying too.
