What kind of cross-feed?

...do NH 268, 269, 273-type balers have? Looking at pictures only, they seem really low-profile, not at all like my 277 that has the (crappy) "fingers on a rack" type cross feed. having had a Super 68 and now a 277, I'm fairly convinced this system is what leads to bannana-bales. Or at least it doesn't help.

Thanks!

New Holland's parts website has some pretty good exploded views of the feeder mechanisms that should help visualize.

The feeder system on the Super 68 and 277 is similar to that of the legendary 276, 316 and later 565 balers. The current BC5050 uses a very similar system too.

After wrestling, refurbing my 68, the banana bales went away. We now have tight bricks. The flow action feeder mechanism works, but it needs to be correctly adjusted, hay dogs and wedges in place, no broken hay dog springs, a sharp knife - set 1/32 inch from the stationary.

Other things that IMHO help are goodly sized windrows (though my 68 didn't seem to care if the windrow was thick or thin this last time out), slower ground speed and 540 rpms to get, in my case an average of 15 strokes/flakes per bale.

Thanks!

The 268/269 (Only difference is the hitch/pto) has a horizontal sliding mechanism with 6 hinged aluminum teeth that pass over the hay on the return stroke, and push the hay in on the feed stroke.
