New Holland 67 Twine

I've always run sisal in my 270, at the hay sale I attend now and then the past 2 years it don't recall seeing any plastic on small squares, many end users don't care for it....

I hear the knotters may need to be set different or sharpened different and the eyes on the needles might wear a bit different, so you just have to try and see. If everything is right and like new it should work with either sisal or plastic, but an old worn in baler might get set in its ways and have to be refurbished to work with a different twine. This is what I hear?

I run the plastic twine in my NH271 and never have any problems. Ya you may need to get the twine knifes sharper and maybe adjust the bill hooks a bit but other then that it should work just fine

You can run plastic through it just as easily as sisal. I don't like plastic, because rabbits like to sharpen their teeth on it. GRRRRRR

I switched my 68 to plastic and 99% of my knotter problems disappeared. There is allegedly a "plastic twine bill hook" out there, but mine worked just dandy with the original.

StrongsOliver,

I have a NH 273 baler so maybe mine would be different from yours. I hate plastic twine and have never used it. On the occasions where I have bought hay from guys who use plastic twine, I've really hated it.

Having said that, I know that the parts manual for the 273 has three different billhooks available. One for sisal, one for plastic, and one for either. I have never looked into it any further than to notice that there are three available. I'll stick with sisal.

I use 170 weight plastic in my 68. Comes in either 7200 or 9600 twin pack rolls... Tytan is the brand I usually get. Rarely misses a knot. I tried 130 wt and it missed knots frequently.

Same here!

I run a NH 68 Hayliner. Literally dug the thing out of the woods, got it turning over, and put some plastic 9600 in it!! GOOD to go! Haven't had any issues with it yet!!!

To be clear - 9600 is the length of the ball, not the weight. It will be marked 170/7200 or 170/9600. I tried some 130/9600 and it did not tie reliably.

You need poly bill hooks. The 67 might have them.... but more than likely won't. It's not a big deal to change them if you don't mind buying them.... they're probably 120 each or so now but that's just a WAG. The only difference between a poly and sisal billhook is that the poly hooks have a relief channel under the finger that allows the hook to close tight whereas the sisal hook has a 3/16" gap when it's closed. That gap.... has to go if you want to use poly twine. I've ground the tips off the fingers to make them close tighter and that worked fine. You could also drill/grind the hook to get the same effect. The only other changes you would need to make might be slight adjustments to the holder tension so it keeps the poly twine in the twine disc, an appropriate alteration to the twine tension for whatever weight you're using and MAKE SURE the twine knives are SHARP!! Sharp enough to shave. Really, all of these things are just regular nominal knotter adjustments that you should be on top of anyway.

We have 273 to and poly in it and have no problems. I just if the older baler would have issues. But everything is good now. Thanks everyone for the input.:)
