John Deere NO.8 Mower Hitch

ive come across a John Deere NO.8 mower from the neighbor for free. im planning on using it to cut my laneway. it never came with the special hitch so I was wondering if anyone has a hitch for one if they could measure the diameter of the shaft that the mower clamps onto. thanks in advance!

what are you going to pull the mower with? believe the parts book on John Deere parts may show hitch for different tractors. They only used the quick hitch, would think there should be someof those available in salvage yards since the same ones were used on the #8 and on #5 with quick hitch

I have the original owners manual from when my grandpa had a no.8 mower. Deere never had a hitch made for a 4010 john deere with the wide swing draw bar. He custom made his own out of the factory hitch it came with. That's why I want the pipe diameter so I can just build my own. That's my only issue. I'll never find an actual hitch in a junkyard around here.

Take a look at the diagram below of the drawbar angles.

Am I missing something here? I am familiar with the quick hitch mount. How about just closing the clamps to measure the diameter & length of the round stub needed. Quicker than firing up the computer to ask someone else to do the same thing.

That would've been easy if I had all of the rubber bushings that fit in the clamps. I only have one and its quite old so it's hard to try and measure the I.D. Of the clamps with only one bushing. Now that I have the shaft diameter I can make rubber bushings to fit snugly on the 1 3/4" shaft.

We used small pieces of a Gates 24026 1 5/8" ID hose instead of the rubber pads on both mowers.

Agree with [b:654c4848f0]hayfarmer[/b:654c4848f0] that "[b:654c4848f0][i:654c4848f0]the same ones were used on the #8 and on #5 with quick hitch[/i:654c4848f0][/b:654c4848f0]".

4320, the JD #38 mower mounts identical to the #5 and #8. Here are some pictures of what I built so I could hook up to it with my category 2 quick hitch. With that, I also had to lengthen the pto shaft a bit. If you need measurements, let me know. (forgive the weeds in the photos)

That looks like a great idea. But my 4010 doesn't have a 3pt hitch. Thanks though!
