Round baler gear box damage .

I have read numerous posts about repairing round baler gear boxes.
Aside from using a high quality oil and checking the oil level regularly,
what kind of operator actions and usage would damage a round baler gear box?

.....in other words...what should I NOT do when running the baler?

I am running 30 yr old Vermeer balers. I lower the tractors RPM's before engaging the PTO. Just puts less stress on the whole drive train, U Joints gearbox, chains etc all last longer.

Sounds right. I think the potential for damage may be increased by slamming it into gear at high RPM's or restarting a stopped bale by slamming it into gear abruptly. But I had hoped that guys with more round baler experience than I have would give me some pointers on how to avoid damaging the gear box and drive train? How to's?

For example do you stop the PTO when at the end of a windrow and turning to start a new windrow? Or do you keep it in gear to keep the momentum going and minimize shock loads to the gear box and drive train?

Thanks,

Dont over think it. Yes leave the roller running going windrow to windrow. I have a JD 567 when i pull in the field the pto goes on when tractor is idling, take it up to pto speed and pto doesnt turn off until I am done rolling the field, idle back down, shut pto off.

this will happen if you hammer it into gear with rpms at pto speed.

As you can see the hex is gone on the old sprocket. The hex on the shaft was rounded also.

i have ran new holland chain balers all my life 845,846,850,851,852 and a few belt balers never liked the belt ones they are the keep your tools handy lol. anyways i never turn with the pto on i shut it off from windrow to windrow i bale with a nh 852 auto tie on a 830 diesel 3rd or 4th low range depending on windrow size or a 930 diesel 1st gear high range both tractors half throttle more or less uphill or down depends i can almost count the bars but never wanna lug the tractor to much either. works great for me 852 nh paid $600 at a consighment sale one bearing two floor chains and one belt handful of shear pins over 5 or 6 years roughly 4000 bales from a $1200 dollar baler you cant go wrong.

I don't turn it off at the end of a windrow unless the chamber is empty. I also don't make sharp turns while its turning, puts too much strain on u -joints. With the Vermeer you have to disengage the pto while opening the tail gate to eject a bale. I could bale quicker with a newer baler but just cant afford one anytime in the future.
