op manual mentions for haylage it is preferred to use cantilever (one side support). is there much difference if you keep length
of cut correct ? what is advantage of non-cantilever auger for corn silage ?

Haylage without using a recutter screen can have a lot of "longs" in it. They will wrap at the support for the auger and cause the support to fail ($$$$).

Not much of any advantage for corn silage.

It would probably be preferable to have the cantilevered auger for haylage... but if you don't have it I can't see dumping a hunk of money to get one if the one you have it not busted completely. What I would do... if the harvester is letting a lot of long stuff through... you need to tighten up the shear bar settings. Those old buggers get a LOT of play in the adjustment mechanism... so if you have half a dozen turns of slack... what happens is you back it off 5-6 turns to pull the bar back away from the knives but that slack is in the mechanism... and the first time you get a good slug go through the bar gets pushed away from the drum... then you get a ragged cut and it takes a hunk more power to run. What you do is tighten up the adjustments on the castleated nuts on the shearbar adjustment bolts. Tighten them up to get rid of the slop and I think you will find you have a MUCH more consistent cut. That will negate the need for the cantilevered auger.

I have a 3940 that we chop haylage with the regular auger and have never had any problems with the end support wrapping. My wifes brother chops his haylage very long(even removes some knives) and he did have problems and changed his auger. We do chop ours short(has to be for a silo unloader) and have never had a problem. Tom

If you keep the cut length shorter than an inch or even an 1 1/2 you will be fine. If you go much longer you will get some real long stuff that will catch on the bearing support. Around here you can hardly find a chopper without the cantilevered auger. As all the local dealers ordered them with it.
