Adams Road Patrol Grader

Hi, I got some implements I am wanting to restore, one of them is an Adams Road Patrol grader with a 6 ft blade. It has a two digit serial number and both a front axle for horse drawn use and a tractor hitch for when you remove the axle. I am guessing its from the teens or twenties? Does anyone know what color these things were when new? Its in darn good shape and I would like to do it right and sandblast and paint it in the factory colors. Thank you in advance!

Yea, I know, but someday I may be pushing up daisies and want to leave this stuff in a trust to someplace for display and if I am going to talk anyone into taking it I got to be pretty accurate, thanks.

Hey Kanscheapskate, Try contacting the Historical Construction Equipment Association, (HCEA.net). They just got a donation of an 1937 Adams 301 motor grader, they have a lot of info. available. I am a volunteer and get to work/play with a lot of neat machines.

It spent the majority of its life with an enduring coat of rust and should be remembered as such. The original paint of whatever color only lasted a few years. I made this same statement at the Madison County Missouri Historical Society when they acquired an old grader of unknown manufacturer.

Thanks, I will do that!

That might be OK for you or me but when we are dead that enduring coat of rust will get nothing but the scrapper's torch while a restored piece might get a new lease on life. Most museums that get farm machinery donated to them that is not in restored condition either let it rot on the back lot, trade it off or just haul it to the junk yard. This is my whole point in restorations, to try to ensure my collections don't end up in a boat heading to China. :-( Thanks

Also try the ACMOC and ACME antique caterpillar forums, I recall discussion's of a similar topic, obscure information about the original colors these were painted. Someone may have some old literature in their collection that may be of help.

I recently bought an Adams square deal #20 horse drawn grader. I found a little surviving paint under some petrified grease. The color is very close to Oliver green,
maybe a shade darker. If there is an accent color on the wheels, I couldn't find any. I hope this helps.
