looking for IH 46/47/430 baler knotter for parts

Finally got around to taking the right side knotter apart on my 46, and figured out why it isn't working properly some of the time. It's more a miracle that it worked at all because the twine cam was rarely where it should have been indexed due to slop.

I found a few other issues, but the biggie seems to be significant wear in the knotter casting (part# 495184R6 / 666510R92 / 668956R91, obsolete from CNH, but apparently still made in Poland). Not that the casting can't be bored and bushed, but it would be a bunch of work in the machine shop (aka: a winter time project), and I'd like to get it fully functional before then if possible.

Bill, I just talked with the local Case/IH dealer this morning, and their parts man looked it up on their computer system and said that part was obsolete and no longer available. I even gave him alternate numbers (revisions) from the parts catalog, and he said all are obsolete. I take it you looked at the CNH website? Not sure why there would be a difference between what you can see and what they can. I may have to call him back, but suspect that with just 4 left, they would be not just expensive, but prohibitively so.

I've come to believe that once they stop making parts, the prices skyrocket as the supply dwindles. He quoted the helical knotter drive gear at over $900 (now no longer available - apparently CNH sold the last one recently), and the taper gear (495192R3) at the top of that shaft at $410 (4 still available at depots). The helical gear (495425R1) is still available in the UK for 35 GBP (about $56 US) on Ebay, but they can't/won't ship overseas.

Anyone in the UK who would be willing to buy it there and ship it here? I could pay for part plus shipping via paypal.

WellWorn,

Yes the part is obsolete thru Case/IH.

Parts Depot www2.depotparts.com 800.743.3768 is an Independent Company that handles obsolete parts from a bunch of companys including Case/IH. They maintain the inventory of parts and then sell them back thru the Dealers according to the make of the part. I am really surprised your Dealer does not know of them. You can go to Part Depot's website and check the number you need on their site. You must then price and buy the part if you want thru a Dealer. If your Dealer does not know of Parts Depot or does not care to help, you can click on Dealer locator on website or call Parts Depot for a participating Dealer.

I checked your part numbers before I answered the first time and as I said they show they have 4 of part #495184R6.

Good luck and let me know if you need more help, Bill

WellWorn, Sorry I did not explain Parts Depot better in my first response. I thought all Dealers knew of them . I had many dealings with Parts Depot with my work as Parts Mgr at Ford Auto Dealership and then several years as Parts Man at Case//IH Dealership in Urbana, OHIO. Parts Depot does a great job of getting obsolete parts out of Dealer inventory and freeing up Dealer money. They then make these obsolete parts available so we can keep our older equipment working. I have always found pricing to be fair. Of course each Dealer decides how much to mark up the part that they buy back and resell from Parts Depot.

Case/IH Dealers can also check other Case/IH Dealers Inventory in the country to see if they still have your part in their inventory. DID YOUR DEALER DO THAT FOR YOU ? I always checked all these options for customer, if he wanted me to, when I ran on to a part that was NLA or Obsolete.

I am retired but can still check your part for you as my brother is a parts man at the Dealer and I am still involved as a shareholder of the business. Just better for you to deal local and close to your area as far as freight charges, availability of parts look up, etc.

Bill

Thanks, Bill. I had no idea. I had a similar issue with some MF parts: local dealer said obsolete, end of story; next further dealer got the OEM parts for me at a reasonable price with a "no problem, glad to help", but didn't explain how. Now it makes sense.

I'll call back monday, talk to the #1 guy, and ask if he can check depotparts.

I do try to support the local dealer whenever possible. It's not just parts, but local expertise. The 2 IH parts guys have been working the counter for years and know IH parts real well, though one is a bit sharper than the other. Often a part might be a little cheaper on the internet, but will take days to get here, or cost as much as the part for overnight shipping. The dealer often has it on the shelf, or can have it in a day for within pennies of the internet price with shipping. Besides, it gives me a reason to get off the farm. ;)

I'll let you know how things work out.

I took a 46 to used eqpt dealer last year with bad plunger. It tied every time but hung the knot on one side. tired of messing with it.
Pine Valley Eqpt 1 573 438 3083
may be gone by now. east-central Mo.

ps he parts out eqpt like that

mmidlam, I have a DD currently near Lansing that comes home for meals and laundry from time to time. Might be able to work something out. Send me an e-mail (it's listed here, might have to go to "classic view", or look at my profile). Let me know roughly where you're at and what you'd want for the knotter assembly. Thanks.

Merlynr, thanks for the info as well. Dealers tend to think what you have isn't worth much, but what they do is pretty dear. I'll see what shakes out of the bushes first.
