John Deere 9W Sickle Bar Mower - Oil Leak

I have a new-to-me John Deere Model 9W mower. After doing extensive work on the blade, I've got that part running (and cutting) smoothly. I went and mowed a bit of pasture with it this evening. Everything seemed to be doing fine. It mowed well, until I broke the old (and probably half-rotten) pitman rod. When I got to the back of the mower to see if I could tie up the rod to drive back to the barn, I noticed oil was leaking out of a hole on the end of the top of the mower--at the end of the knuckle that sticks out to hold the upper frame when you lower the mower, on the "back side" of where the PTO shaft enters the mower.

It was quite a bit of oil. Enough that I could see a small trickle coming out (I had just turned off the PTO maybe 20 seconds before that).

Should there be a plug there? Is it some kind of overflow? I am guessing there are two gear boxes on the mower, an upper and a lower. I filled the lower box to the fill plug with gear oil before I started mowing (it appears to leak when the mower is tilted backwards, as well).

Any help anyone could offer would be most appreciated.

If I follow your description of the location of the leak correctly, you're missing a grease fitting. Go to jdparts.com, do a model # search and double check. Inside the case, the pto turns a chain via a slip clutch, to turn the flywheel. The chain splashes the 90 weight up to lube the upper bearings. The missing zerk allows you to positively lube the aft upper bearing. I had to replace upper and lower seals when I got mine (Still available @ Deere). I recommend you get a manual, lots of good info about setup and maintenance. HTH. Mark

"I am guessing there are two gear boxes on the mower, an upper and a lower."

NOPE, NO "gearboxes", at all, just one chaincase.

You need an operator's manual. Often, then can be had cheap on ebay or $30 from Mother DEERE by calling 1-800-522-7448.

You can view or download the parts catalog for FREE (.pdf) at the official DEERE link below, then verify what is missing. (I think the other poster is correct, a grease zerk.)

I love this site! I've spent many hours on here over the past 18 months since I inherited my grandfather's 841 Ford. The people that peruse this forum are such a wealth of information. Thank you!

I ordered a manual from eBay today. $15 isn't too bad. Should be here by the end of the week.

I'll find a fitting and see if that doesn't take care of at least one of my leaks haha! Looks like a 1/8 inch straight fitting. Thanks again!
