Hi Folks.

Need oil for the gearbox on this unit and don't have a manual for it. Does this take 30w or gear oil like 75/90?

I there a manual posted somewhere for these? I'd like detail on how the cable to the gearbox is supposed to work.

Do not know that rake as such but I would run 85W-140 in it. Likely to be like one I sold a couple years ago and that was what I put in it and last I knew it still was working just fine

I have a very old and very used 55 rake. The New Holland owners manual says to use grease to refill. I've been using it that way for the last 15 years or more with no problems. Your mileage may vary.

This has a pipe plug with a cotter pin vent and no oil level hole so maybe your right it should be grease?

I have just used a corn head grease in mine for years. Gear oil will usually leak out of the box.

The cable is hooked to the shifter arm on the gear box. The other end is hooked to a short arm on the frame. The short arm will break over center holding the cable taunt this disengages the gear box. I only use this for moving short distances behind a tractor at slower speeds. If I travel very far I still take the drive shaft off the wheel. Try pulling it behind a pickup and hit a bump at 30 MPH and have the arm engage the gear case. You will have a lot of broken parts. So take the drive shaft off.

Originally they came with an oil I believe, but that was changed to 'corn head grease' later on.

This is a grease that melts pretty low temp, solidifies again when it cools down.

Whole lot of folk pump in just whatever grease is in the gun and they seem to roll on.....
