I need to change to a smaller screen in my Gehl MX65 grinder mixer (model 55 mill.) Does anyone know of a company that makes replacement screens? Other idea I'm thinking about is buying a piece of perforated steel plate and having it rolled at a local metal fab shop that has a big 3-roll roller. I think they could match the radius of my old screen, only problem would be that the edges of the screen would have partial holes instead of a smooth edge. Think that would matter?
The mill has a 1 1/2" screen in it now, and I've been using it for grinding ear corn for feeding steers. Had a lot of trouble last winter with the feed bridging in the mixer tank, lots of problems unloading. Seems like I'm getting a lot more husks that aren't getting cut up, and bigger chunks of cob than I had before. The corn had been picked a few months before, so it might have been higher moisture than previous crop, but it seemed plenty dry when picked and cribbed. Used a different picker that did a cleaner job with less husks, so I was surprised to have so much trouble. The edges of the holes in the screen look rounded, and the hammer corners are rounded too, so that may be part of the problem. Still have 3 good corners on the hammers, so I'll rotate them too.
I'm thinking that 3/4" would be a better screen size to use than the 1 1/2". When I ground ear corn from previous years, I have always had problems with the feed not wanting to flow out of the steer stuffer, I think due to the strands of husks in the feed. I always have to check it every day to bang on the doors and pull feed down, and open it every few days to knock down the bridging. A lot of cob chunks in the pan too that the steers pick out. Some of the cob chucks are up to an inch long. I run the mill with a Farmall M, wide open throttle.
