1209 John Deere mower-conditioner

Broke the sickle head on this mower today. Question is should the pin that goes thru the head come out easily? I thought it should but had to beat it really hard with hammer and piece of wood to get it out. There appears to be a high spot in the center of the drive arm hole that keeps the pin from going in easily Also, can the sickle head be welded with any success? This head has needle bearings in it.

Breaking of the sickle head can be caused by wrong guards or wear plates installed at the head area, or drive pin/bearing worn and banging. Cannot have slop.

Welding, maybe.

Yes I ahve welded them with no issues. At one time I had the same issue with breaking the heads off on the knife arm. I final relized that my father installed the wrong hold down next to the pitman end of the cutter bar. It needed a high arch hold down to allow the the knife head to move freely. Look at the parts list on jdparts.com. I suggest looking at the 1219 parts list cause it shows a better brake down of what gaurd goes where. Also, send me an email and I will share the service manula with you.

is it just me or are the sickle bars a pain in the backside to get in and out when replacing cutters...
