114 newholland haybine

One of the neighbors is selling a 114 new Holland swather. Might be a good step up/replacement for what I'm using now. Anything to know about one of these?

I have a 114 for twenty five years, bought it well used.
It's been a dependable machine all those years, i have not had to replace a bearing or knife bushing yet or had a big break down in the 7-8000 acre i cut with it. It still has the original knives in it.
The main drawbacks are,..they do plug up in real heavy crops though and are a PITA to unplug. (In a average crop they'll zoom trough without a glitch).
And secondly the 4' wide chevron rollers crimper however is far to narrow and restrictive for a 14' wide machine to pass a heavy crop trough and as a result does a poor job of crimping. The rollers wear only at the ends, the center 3' never see anyaction, .(if i had knows this at the time i would've never bought it) i replaced the rollers once about 10 years ago and they are badly worn again.
Also,... the automatic chain oiler is a joke,..it oils the chains only on one side
I think the later 116 with the 8' wide crimper is a far better bine.

If the bine is well adjusted you should be able to spin it at the flywheel with 2 fingers

Thanks,
sounds like I'm no longer interested. I'm not a fan of conditioners that aren't the same width as the cut.

If you "only want conditioners that are the same width of cut",then your choices are limited. 9 ft is the widest conditioner out there. That said, the New Holland 499 haybine is it. 12 ft cut,9' crimper. I have one.Lay the hay in a wide 9" swath,or a 3' windrow,or anyplace between. My only 'beef' is short thin(2nd cut) grass.Tends to fall to the ground between the 'header' and crimper.Otherwise a good machine that will cut and 'digest' anything. And one that has been extremley trouble free/reliable.As in NO problems, ever.

would love to have a 499 if they only were 2' wider

What I want doesn't exist. I want to be able to go through a 12ft gate, cut 16 ft. wide, have conditioners that are the same width as the cut (so it will almost never plug up.) Oh, and it needs to cost less than $3500 and not be too worn out.
Not much luck is there. I'll probably settle for welding on my 1091 Hesston and replacing the broken pickup teeth.

hat's the reason i stuck with my 114.
Its in good shape and paid off a long time ago.
All it needs is new guards and knife sections and i'm good for another 3 years.

I'm small time around here when it comes to haying. But in the 5 years I've had it the cost of repairs and initial purchase the 1091 has run me $3 an acre. Wish I could go bigger but it has earned its keep and probably has a few hundred acres left in it.
