JD baler knotter question

JD 346 baler which is having problems with 1/75 bales twine breaking. The knot is tied fine but the twine breaks either immediately after the bale is dropped or while handling. Only the right twine breaks (as you are facing the direction of travel). The break is right next to the knot (within 1/4 inch or less, basically on the knot) on the string over the top of the bale. As I said before the knot is good and tight and same as the left side.

I looked it up in the manual and made sure every setting is to spec. I took off the wiper arm on that right side and found a burr on the concave that wipes over the billhook and wipes the knot off and smoothed/cleaned it up. Could not find any other rough spots on the wiper arm and sharpened the twine knives.

Any suggestions?

Do you mean the twine disc holder in the knotter mechanism or the twine tension holder on the twine bin?

Thanks

He is refering to the twine disc holder (where the needle brings the twine up to). You will need a 9/16" open end wrench. Mark your bolt before you adjust it. Remember, a little adjustment will make a big difference.

If the bale makes it out of the baler before it breaks it sounds like poor quality twine, or you're just trying to make them too heavy, but if it's poly, you make some awful heavy bales. What are you using for twine? I wouldn't mess with the twine disks. The twine held by those isn't used in the bale anyways, so they won't really cause this problem.

I would be mostly inclined to think that the twine tension coming from the twine can is too high on that side... and it may be pulling it hard against the knotter frame or something. Other possibility is a worn needle eye on that side. That can also contribute to excessive twine tension... I don't really see the holder itself being the problem but it may be adjusted to compensate for another problem that is causing this...

Your twine disc tension could be set too high, fraying the twine a little bit adjacent to the knot. Try loosening the bolt holding the finger spring. Or the disc might be a little sticky, in that case pour a little diesel fuel on there to see if they free up and move a little easier.

I agree with you. He doesn't say how tight he is packing the bales. If the bales are heavy, I would loosen that up some. Also, how dry is the hay when its baled?

I am using sisal twine and this has happened with a couple of different rolls of twine. The hay is dry and the bales aren't too heavy. I will try adjusting the twine disc tension.
