JD 1217 conditioner roll spacing

We just got a 1217. Never ran a moco before. The manual explains how to adjust spacing but doesnt give any reccomedations for amount of space. I'm cutting grass hay. What space am i looking for? 1"? 2"? Thanks.

Depends somewhat on what you are cutting. For grasses a d alfalfa hay my rollers are about 1/8inch apart (as close as I can get them without them touching). For cutting oats or barley for greenfeed I increase the gap to try lower then number of heads snapped off, not sure it helps that much though.

Per the service manual at the closest point should be between 0.010" to 0.025" clearence and no more than 0.219" at any piont.

Send me an email and I will send you the service manual.

They run together on ours. If they rattle they need to be timed. They should open slightly when it is raised up. This is to help with unplugging it. Timing they are supposed to run so the ribs are centered between the opposite ones. Check for roll bearings being bad. They will usually show signs of being loose endwise on the shaft before they will make noise. They will look like they have been turning on the shaft. the tension can be set 2 ways. One by how far the pin is from the roll piviot the other by the spring adjustment directly.
Do check the wobble box and the gear train box for oil level. Especially if the gear train box looks like it might be seeping some.
If the rolls are touching on the ends outside of where the material goes through and not in the middle I took a grinder and ground off some of the rubber coating so they would be tighter. Did it on both rolls at both ends.

Conditioner rolls on a JD Mo-Co aren't intended to touch. I've never seen 1217/1219 rolls separate when header is raised nor do I think they separate when raising platform.
