Poly-twine in New Holland 270

I have a New Holland 270 that works like a champ. I would like to keep it that way. I priced Sisal twine this weekend at Rural King it is right at $53. Poly twine is $25. Can one safely use the poly twine in an older square baler? I don't want to do anything to hurt the knotters. If this has been posted before sorry, I have not looked into this before I saw the prices.

I still have a preference for the Deere balers but the NH is right behind and I wish we still had our 270.

If it doesn't have an all twine type bill hook it won't tie the poly without some modification to the bill hook fingers OR changing to the all twine hooks. It's not a big deal... but it doesn't work without it. Sisal bill hooks do not close tightly so they don't grip tight enough to hold the poly. Other than that... there are no issues. You might have to tweak the tension settings for the twine and the holders but that's about it if it has the newer hooks.

Give 170 poly a try. It works just fine in my 68 baler. 130 did what Rod said, did not hold tight enough to make the knot reliably. Only cost you $20 bucks to give it a try....

NY 986 I had a 283 several years ago (belonged to my dad) He gave me the option to buy it. I thought I would never square bale again so I let him sell it. BIG mistake, that baler would bale anything at any speed. Only time it had a problem was when it change string rolls it would miss one bale. This 270 had new knotters put on it so I bought it to have some square bales to feed when the weather gets bad and I have to put them (horses) in the stall. The 270 you can't crowd it, you have to go slow and it will miss two or three at string change. The 283 hayliner is one that I have kicked myself in the butt many times for letting it go. I think I may give the poly a try, I just wanted to make sure it wouldn't break anything.

Poly twine worked well in my 273, but one other thing to pay attention to is the twine knives. Poly requires a VERY sharp knife.

I used the orange plastic that came in a 9000' pair of rolls to a box and was about 3x the diameter of round baler twine. It did fine on a JD 14T and that's pretty ancient of a machine. Knots tied good and held. Only problem with twine vs my later wire was rats eating it. Course on the wire (different baler) they wet on it and that caused it to rust. So get more barn cats.
