i just got jd 3960 chopper. unlike other choppers there are NOT shear pins on both feed rolls. just on upper. the lower feed roll in back drives the front on other side. has anybody had any problems with this setup ? my older (35 & 38) did not have shear bolt or slip clutch (3800) and it caused major problems such as snapping of round feed roll shaft. i think these are hex so should be better.

The lower rear roll is only a smooth roll so it's not an issue... I could be wrong at this point because I haven't looked at a 3960 without the metal detector in some time... but I think that roll is still protected through one of the other drives. I do know that when one of the bearings starts tightening up on the rolls (failing) it WILL start snapping shear bolts. The machines with Iron Guard and the jaw clutches are a lot better setup in many ways than the shear bolt machines...
