Anderson Rock Picker PTO Clutch

The PTO drive on this implement has a slip clutch consisting of two outside flange faces, a center plate and two fiber discs. The clutch pack is held together with 5 3/8" bolts that tension springs. I need to find out how tight to compress these spring packs, any ideas? I can not find a manual or a service shop for this machine. They were made in Montana by Armor Manufacturing, which is now out of business.

That's usually information that's contained in the Op's manual or you could have measured the spring length before you took it apart. Haha... I guess that ship sailed. Anyway... It looks like a 35 series Weasler. What I would do is start torqueing it up a bit so it compresses the springs mabey half an inch each... then go to the field. Tighten it just enough to make the thing pick correctly. I'm not familiar with that picker but I've done quite a bit of raking with a Degelman rake... and that's all I've ever done is tighten it up so it's quite tight but can still slip. Your tolerance for quite tight or just enough will be determined by how much you like buying driveline parts. A picker... you can probably run a bit on the looser side.

Thanks for the comments. I would love to see a manual.......unfortunately this unit was loaned to me by folks who did not have one and the caveat that it was not really working! So, I am trying to get it functional. The springs are very close wound and stiff. You could not compress them 1/2", maybe 1/4" .
 
Well, if the springs are that stiff then don't go so much.. Basic idea is the same... just get some compression on them and keep them at even lengths... then continue compression on the springs until it works correctly.
