Serrated Sickle on Int. 990

I just bought a new sickle for my old International 990 haybind.
I't has serrated on the bottom of the sections.
How long will they stay sharp and can I sharpen them the same way I have done with the old non-serrated sickle?
Do I have to change the guards and hold-downs?
Thanks Jeff

I never sharpened serrated sections. If the guards and hold downs were good for the old knife they will still be good.

I'll tell you what I think and you probably won't like it. First, to the best of my knowledge, only New Holland made a haybinE. But enough splitting hairs...I have a IH 990 and I think it is a really excellent and affordable mower/conditioner. It is just my opinion, but I do not think it is worth the time to sharpen sections and I only replace sections when the knife is fairly new and one gets broken. What I do is just replace the whole thing when the sections start to get uniformly dull. I keep on extra around for an emergency, and sell the rest to someone who wants to sharpen and replace or even use it as a barn decoration. I think the entire knife is less than $200 and a new one sure saves a lot of time and makes haying a lot easier.
