501 mower guards

This should be simple, but...

My 501 mower could use a few new guards. This used to be a real common mower.

Now, I'm getting all messed up trying to cross reference this. The mower has guards that say 'Ford' on them, no number. There are 2 guards that end in '-255'. So I. Thinking maybe I need to look for a 255 guard?

But... With ford and now New holland changing their numbering so often, I'm getting lost.

The local fleet and farm don't seem to have the right guards on the rack any more.

Paul,

I also have a Ford 501 sickle bar mower. A couple years ago I needed some new guards. I went to TSC. They didn't have the exact same guard with "Ford' stamped on it, but after a lot of calling around and hem-hawing about what to do, I bought some of their generic guards with integrated ledger plates. They seem to work just fine, so, now when I need a new guard I just buy their generic guard. Although the price is a little bit higher, I figure it's a trade off since I don't need to buy ledger plates and the little posts that go in to hold the ledger plate in place.

You might try something from from Fleet & Farm (or whatever the exact name is, we don't have any of them around here).

Have you tried Central Tractor parts in DesMoines which is now nnalert. I as well have a Ford 501 mower and my last knives, guards and ledger plates and rivets came from them.

Do not know what all you have around you but the last time I needed Ford guards my local Orscheln's had them. I do not remember which sickle mower I have I use them on but think maybe it is the JD-9 that I took out of a fence row and used parts form to or 3 other sickle bar mower to make it useable

Hi Paul,
Just throwing out some ideas here for you. Have you tried the old Ford/NH guys on the hill in town? I am not sure what they can still buy/order since they don't have either brand anymore. How about the new Mills Fleet Farm in Mankato? I have been in there twice for a very short time frame, but the place is absolutely massive! They do carry a few aisles of farm equipment parts. Not sure about sickle parts, as I have not looked myself. Online like Shoup maybe? Good luck.

Put New Holland swather guards on it and be done. You will never go back to the single guard again. You have to cut 1 on a 7 foot bar.

Mankato as in MN?? I have family in that area. Do you by chance know any body in that area with the last name of Marg???

Hi Rich,
Yes I was referring to Mankato, Minnesota. I bought some Allis tractor parts from you some years ago and I know we chatted a couple times by phone. I recall you saying you had family up here. I work in Mankato, Minnesota, but reside in rural New Ulm. I do not know anyone with the name of Marg, sorry. Feel free to email me anytime at [email protected] if you ever want to chat. That would be nice. Thank you.

Had an uncle that died not long ago that live in Winona MN and have a cousin in he Menesaka area who owns the family farm now. I have not been up in MN in so many years I can not remember the last time I was up there. But at one time back say 55 or so years ago I did live up there.
