am going thru jd 3960 forage chopper. it does not have spring assisted float for head attachments. it is all hydraulic. does this work ok ? any other quirks i should know about ? any problems with electro hy controls ? any extra parts i should have on hand ? previously used a 3800 w/ electric controls.

We had choppers that lacked floating springs and had no problems. If your ground rolls a bit it just means being more vigilant in terms of the head gouging the ground. A lot of the Deere hayheads had the gauge wheels out to the front. There is a place that parts out Deere choppers over by Penn Yan, NY. Country Side Eqpuipment and the phone is 607-243-5555. He may have a used float setup.

They work OK but you have to be on top of it. Gauge wheels might help. I've seen them and actually have a 7' parts head with wheels but I've never used it. The lift cylinder on those things is single acting anyway so as long as it has wheels ahead of it, it should follow the contours. Without wheels... it doesn't float. Not at all... and you can/will destroy the head.
The electric controls frequently give trouble in the cab connection. Other than that, they're pretty reliable. The odd solenoid now and then. The harvester itself... most of them have torn the splines off the blower drive shaft by now and some of them got welded. Some got a repair sleeve. Keep lots of pickup fingers on hand as well as the bearings for the header... both the auger and the pickup as they can crap out at any time. It generally doesn't hurt to have a change of bearings for the feed rolls either... I used to find that 4-5 years was the life of those things, more or less... depending on the machine and how it was stored.

Very good machine and will pull much easier than your 3800. You will also like the easier adjustment on the shearbar along with better knife sharpener. We went from a 38 to a 3940 and could run a gear faster. Tom
