JD #71 No-til Set Up

After this spring with rain every other day, making it too wet to plow, I'm thinking about making my #71 units no-till. I know I need coulters, which I think Yetter has. Anyone set one up no-till?

I don't know how well this would work.Closing the seed trench would be a real challenge.John Deere did offer a no till setup based on 71 units.I think it was called the 1440.I played around with a IH 56 planter but was never satisfied with the results.I couldn't get the downpressure I needed to place the seed properly and the opener bearings wouldn't take the pounding. The only thing that I did right was to put the heaviest drag chains I could on each row to drag dirt back into the seed trench.

If it"s too wet to plow, it"s too wet to plant. No-till won"t solve that. You"d need a very sturdy frame to hang a no-til coulter on, and covering in wet soil is always an issue. Plus turning the land into a brick, restricting emergence.

You could turn the 71's into NT units, but you'd be much better off getting a 7000. No til still needs to have fairly dry ground or the seed trench doesn't close properly. And, notice the closing wheel on your 71 (and even on 80 units). The wheel also acts as the depth control wheel. It just mashes the trench down some. A 7000 has the gauge wheels right beside the openers and a separate set of closing wheels that push some soil back into the seed trench. The openers are also designed differently. Two row or four, it probably won't cost much more to get a 7000 than sell your setup and get a newer planter. And, it will pay you back very quickly.......
