494 planter row spacing

can a 494 be set to 30 or less inch rows and not have to move the wheels? seems to me the book says 28 in rows possible but it looks to me like the drive wheels would be in the way.

The 494A I had could be set to 30" rows without moving the wheels but you had to have the small-style seed cans on the two inside units to clear the tires.

Need to ask a question about Covington planters and don't know where I should make the post. Can someone guide me to proper way.

This is the right forum for that. Just create a new post with your question and as many details as you can provide. Pictures sometimes help a great deal.

The wheels are not adjustable on a 494 like on some 494A planters. You do need the small seed boxes. Had one that way for a while. There was also a special narrow axle avaible that you could use the standard boxes. Had one of the narrow axles and without thinking things through as I should have sold it. You have to shorten the marker arms as well.

494 has the round tubes where the fert openers attach. 494A has the square tubes....cuz the openers rotated on the round tubes.

As I recall, it was solid axle assembly. There was a wide one, and a narrow one. I bought, and switched a 494A from 36" to 30". I was fortunate enough that a neighbor had just bought a 1240(I think) at auction, which was narrow, and he wanted wide rows(he still used horses!) So I was able to switch axles.

If they did you did not have the complete opener assembly as there were braces to take care of that.

I have a 495 planter and I converted it to 30" rows, but you will need the skinny seed cans
