Tx Jim, Roger, Baler help!

My 535 baler had trouble starting bales so I took your advice last year and welded some beads on the metal starter roll. Now the net wrap started wrapping up on the starter roll and john deere's suggestion is to grind the weld off. I'm afraid it may have trouble starting the bale again, but getting out every four or five bales to cut the net off the roll and unroll the bale is tiring as well. Also the baler sometimes starts to open by itself while baling! I make sure to close it completely and don't leave the remote on float or anything. Is there a such thing as a check valve that could be installed to keep it from opening? I have tried both remotes on my 1086 and one seems slightly worse than the other, however I don't have Hyd problems with any other implement I use on it. Could it have anuthjng to do with the tension valve up in the front of the baler? Sometimes the gauge acts a little screwy. I plan on bringing it in the shop and doing a little more investigating and grinding any burrs off the welds and also making sure the gate latches are properly adjusted.
Thanks
Zach

Yep, too rough of weld on the starter roll will cause it to wrap net... Just smooth it up some.

A leaky tractor SCV will open the gate. Close the gate, leave the tractor running, no PTO running and watch to see if the gate cylinders slowly extend. If so SCV is leaking.

You can also close the gate, unplug the hoses for the gate cylinders and make a bale. That will tell you if the gate cylinders are leaking internally as the gauge should maintain a constant reading. HTH.

I agree with Roger to grind rough spots off.

Did you only weld on the leading edge of rectangular bar that you can see from rear(tailgate open & locked)when the bar is at the top of the starter roll? I bale in sandy soil and I've welded on every JD rd baler starter roll I've owned. I even have extra short bars on each side welded in between original bars. I bale mostly Coastal and my baler starts bales excellent, runs very minimal hay up the frt belts and very seldom catches netwrap on starter roll.

On gate opening is just "gate open light" coming on or is the gate lock controlled by gate cylinder unlatching?

Ok I'll grind the rough spots off and make sure I
welded the leading edge like you said, but I'm pretty
sure I did. On the gate the actual gate is opening.

As Roger stated a leaking scv or possibly a leaking piston seal on a gate cylinder is probably the reason. Do as Roger stated close gate, unplug male tips and attempt to make a bale to determine if gate will remain closed.

Forgot one other thing concerning the gate latching. Hold the SCV to close the gate longer than you think is necessary. When the gate goes BANG it is not latched! Cylinders have to move some more to latch it!
