Round baler gearbox leak

Have a slow seeping leak around the gearbox cover plate. Gasket no longer serviced.
I know I can make a gasket and reassemble, but a very knowledgable old local repairman
suggested that I just fill the box half full of grease plus a pint of 80-90 gear oil and
run it like that.

Have any of you tried this? Success? or total gear box failure?

By the time you buy the grease and the 80-90 you got the price of the corn head grease and a better product.

Why not fabricate a gasket (pretty easy stuff) and fix the leak. The gear box was designed for a particular lubricant and you can be significantly shortening the life to mix and match other formulations of lubricants.

I would agree with bison, a tube of silicon can be your friend when working on older equipment that parts are no longer sold. I see many things "siliconed " . Don't always look pretty , but if you can't buy the gasket ,and the equipment is only of any real value to you, It would be worth a try.

Lubriplate 105, used for pre lube on engine rebuilds. Most auto parts stores here carry it. Viscosity half way between 140w oil and #2 grease. Works great and just shoot it in rather than oil. Ensure that your fill screw is vented. If not auto parts stores have them too. Prevents the box from building up pressure when it gets hot and forcing the oil out!

John Deere has a product called Multi-lube. It is a pourable grease that was used in grease banks on corn pickers, combine heads, baler knotters and other machines. I have used it in rotary mower gearboxes with no problems I like it better than grease as it flows more. It comes in quart bottles. Tom
