trailer plow vs 3 pt

I've wondered about this for a few years now. My tractor has no draft control, so in plowing, 3 pt IH 209A w/ trip beams, always back and forth hand on rockshaft lift lifting lowering. land is rolling. would i get better results using trailer plows? lengthing out wheelbase. neighbors got deere 44 on rubber and is getting out, good chance to go from 6 acres to over 20

Trailer plow in 99% of conditions will do a better job. Have had 3 point, trailer and semi-mount. Think all so easier to get adjusted.

Many with small tractors without draft, have a depth gauge wheel mounted to the side of the plow, this works fine.

Do not know if it would work in your case as you must have a much larger tractor.

Trailer plow might just be the ticket for you, millions of acres were turned with them over the years with good results.

check to be sure you can still get replacement plow parts for the plow, if not all you will have is a yard decoration.

For an older non draft controlled tractor,a pull type is best. You will always fight the 3 point. The pull type has plowed more ground than the 3 point ever will.

I agree a trailer plow will do the best job. My Dad always said that when a trailer plow was adjusted correctly you could pull it with a 10 ft chain and it would plow straight.

I used to help FIL with the plowing and we always carried a log chain on the platform. If the tractor got stuck in a wet spot, just unhitch and drive it out, pull the plow through with the chain. I suppose that's a well-know trick.

If you have enough tractor to pull it a trailer type will do a better, prettier plowing job. Most of the guys using 3pt plows around here seem to be trying to imitate a field hit by an artillery barrage. But you have to have enough tractor to pull it smoothly and a plow in good shape.

I like semi mounted trouble with both fully mounted and semi is if you have a narrow front end and you hit a bump or dip the back end will go up or down causing the plow to change depth .what's real bad is when you hit real hard plowing and the front starts to lift the back goes down the plow goes deeper making it harder plowing then the front goes up even quicker. Trailer plows will follow the ground level better but you don't have as much weight transfer
