stump grinder: is walk behind ok?

Thinking of adding another machine to my collection....how GOOD are walk behinds? Want to buy a machine from a rental fleet with the plans to repower when it dies....no private owner machines have showed up.

I have used those rental ones. They work pretty good grinding soft wood but when you get into hard wood like oak or locust you will have your hands full. The machine just isn't heavy enough to stand still.

carl I rented 1 last fall it was not self propelled. It was a man killer. As long as you had 2 or 3 inches of stump above ground it was ok. anything more than that it took forever. It still was very hard to man handle around in soft dirt.

I recently rented a stump grinder;I rented the self propelled walk beside, hydraulic controlled. After using it,I considered the self propelled a much, much better machine to use=way easier on ME!!Mark

How deep will they grind? I will probably be taking out a dozen or so Cedars and Ponderosas in the 150 foot + range this summer to make room for a shop. I have to decide whether to get the stumps with a grinder or hire an excavator

I would use an excavator and take stumps out and get all the roots that you can. You don't want the roots to rot out under your concrete floor.

I own a Husquvarna stump grinder and it work well on red cedar stumps. The smaller the stump the better. I have ground maybe 200 stumps so far and it has worked well. I am just growing grass over the stumps and just need to get them down a put some dirt over them. If you keep sharp teeth on it it will grind oak pretty well but it will take longer. Definitely best to get rid of all you can with a chain saw. It will work you moving it around.
