Kuhn GMD 600 II PTO Shaft

I am working on getting a Kuhn GMD 600 II up and running to mow some open land in and around an orhcard with. I have done a bunch of maintenance on the mower and got it set up correctly, I believe, on the 3 pt. The issues I am having is that the PTO shaft I thought was the one for this mower is too long. I am new to this mower however the mower is not new to the orchard I am running. I had to go out and buy a new toplink from JD to get the mower on the 2555 JD. After trying the three PTO shafts at the orchard I can't find one that fits. After doing a lot of reading I am also not sure if I need to buy a PTO shaft with a slip clutch or not. The Serial # tag is gone on the mower and I was told by the local dealer this is the only way to know what PTO shaft to order. I see two choices online, one with, a slip clutch, and one without that is listed for the GMD600 & GMD 700. I understand the purpose of the slip clutch but how do I know which one I need? The price difference is also a bit staggering!

As previously stated cut driveline to fit tractor. Google u-tube for a video that shows correct method for measuring both pto shaft halves. Kuhn disc cutter has belt drive so no slip clutch is required.

Good point re slip clutch. I forgot that in the previous post. What is required tho is an ORC on the tractor end of the shaft.

If you have any other tractor other than a Deere you won't have to cut the PTO shaft. I have 4 or 5 Mowers (Disc and rotary) that work fine on Fords, IHs, ACs, Mahindras but 3 of my 4 Deeres have 3-point arms too short.

I found two for sale on eBay that are cut to length but the difference in price between slip clutch and non-slip clutch models is staggering. Local tractor supply doesn't have cut to length, only pre-sized, none of which seemed to be long enough.

(quoted from post at 05:35:24 05/27/15) I found two for sale on eBay that are cut to length but the difference in price between slip clutch and non-slip clutch models is staggering. .

As I previously stated drive belts on Kuhn act as slip clutch so no slip clutch is required.

As said before... you do not need a SLIP clutch... but you DO require the over running clutch so that the mower can wind down when you shut the PTO off. If you don't have that you WILL harm the brake band in the tractor's PTO brake. I guess if the tractor in question has no PTO brake then it doesn't really matter... but for my own piece of mind I'd still want the ORC.

So this is new to me and I have worked on multiple farms over the last 19 years. No one I have worked for has ever run an ORC on anything including at the orchard I am at now. We don't have one on the property including for the sprayer which is brand new and no ORC was recommended by dealer. I get what it does and after doing some reading think I need to run out and buy 4 or 5 as it sounds like it should be used with any piece of PTO equipment or is it just needed for older equipment such as a Ford N series tractor?

It's needed with any high inertia equipment like those mowers. The original shaft for that mower has the ORC built into the 6 spline yolk that fits to the tractor. I'd run it without one rather than use those wobbly extension bastards that fit between the tractor and the implement shaft. Use the correct integrated yolk/ORC.
