NH 156 Problems
Hi, I have a 156 Tedder that when i went to use it this weekend, i had the drive shaft come off of the pto while transporting it to my barn to grease it up to use. When i got everythign untangled and hooked up properly( the spring loaded lock wasnt engaging the whole way)it seemed that when i powered it up the tines would clash occasionally. Im not sure what could have happened. there seemed to be a bit of slop from one rotor to the other....maybe an inch or two. HAs anyone ever seen the "timing" go off like this? What should i check first? The operators manual doesnt really show much in the way of timing it so the rotors are spaced evenly when they travel thru the center. Thanks, Neal

Can't directly answer your problem, but I have the same tedder. One place to look is on New Holland's parts website. They have some nice, downloadable, exploded parts diagrams. If you have a look-see, you might see what is a-miss.

The only thing that affects timing on a two rotor tedder is how it's assembled. Assuming you didn't bend / twist an arm, sounds like it skipped/broke teeth when it "crashed"

Other than the override clutch on the PTO shaft ,is there a "shear" pin or keyway that might give before the bevel gear gets hurt? The owners manual shows assembly of the entire rotor section, but not the assembly-disassembly of the bevel gear portion. Is there a "repair" manual available? Thanks, Neal

There are three sets of gears, main gear box and each rotor. All it takes is for one of these to jump a tooth to mess the timing up.

We had the gears fail in the main box (Kuhn 22...they made NH 156), so ours was all apart, it was fun getting it timed.

I don't recall any pins that would slip or shear, but it's been years since I've been into it, but it wasn't hard to take apart, just awkward. unless you completely take the rotors off. Try looking the exploded parts diagrams up for NH/ messicks. At least you can see what is in there.

Well, it still spins with power applied , so I leaning
towards one of the teeth being damaged or broken.
How much "play" should there be before the second
rotor moves as you rotate the first? I've got maybe
1"-2" of play. Thanks Neal
