N H 256 rake

My N H 256 doesnt want to start turning part of the time if I stop. Today I stopped for something and it wouldnt start raking when I started back up. I watched and all shafts were turning except the one that is attached to the gearbox. I got off and turned the shaft by hand and worked the lever back and forth untill I felt it engage . Got back on the tractor and still no dice! Called my wife and had her work the lever on the gearbox back and forth while I drove forward slowly it engaged and I was able to finish the field. Thick hay didnt seem to slow it down. Is there a spring in the box to help keep it in gear? I thought I would post on here before I tear into it. Where can I get a repair manual for it? I own them for all my tractors but never needed one for my rake. Thanks for any help Lee

The cogs are probably worn down.It cant fully engage by itself. If you are done with your 1st cut,go ahead and tear into it. It may not be as bad as you think.

Lee, you are right. There is a spring and an engagement gear . Both will need to be replaced. Just did one gear box and getting ready to do number 2 this week. parts are right at 90.00. Refill with gun grease when done.

Thanks so much guys. I am not done with first cutting but its raining and we have a wet forecast for the next week. I guess if I can get my hands on the parts I will tear into it. Anything special I need to look out for ?

Many times its the gear that goes out to the star wheel that gets worn the most. Try and lift up on the star wheel, that will tell you what kind of shape that bearings is in. Bad thing that gear is made onto the shaft that goes out to the star wheel. Hope its just your spring.

Most places have a pretty good online parts diagrams these days, you can check out what it should look like in there?
