such a thing as to small of a plow for a tractor

I would like to find a 3 bottom 16 inch
plow to use instead of a 4 -16 semi
mount in a few small fields any reason
why it won't work behind an oliver 1850
or similar sized tractor?

Mounted, drawn, or semi-mounted???? If you are looking for maneuverability, you can't beat mounted and you should easily still pull 4 bottoms. I don't know how small the fields are but at our place, we plow some pretty small fields with a semi-mounted 5 bottom with 20" bottoms on a Deere 4055 2wd. It is mostly about the person behind the wheel.

Depending on plow you might have to adjust your wheel tread different due to center of draft. On the 5000 Ford I had for the 3-16" mounted plow I had to use a 60" wheel tread but if I put the 4-14 semi mounted behind it then I had to set the wheel tread to 72" for center of draft. Think it was 72" but could have been 76", too long to remember for sure. I only had to move the right wheel as having the dual on the left side the center of the duals came out to what should have been center of one tire.

i have a oliver 565 4-16 but most of my fields are 1 to 4 acers and most have a perimeter fence. the 4-16 does good but id like a mounted 3 point hitch style I think it might be easier to get in the corners. I have never tried a 3 bottom on the oliver 1850 but curious if it would work ok.

You really can't harvest the corners anyway so why bother plowing the corners? Add long as the steering is fairly tight you shouldn't have many issues backing into the corners with a semi mounted. Our 546 has good steering and can be backed pretty easy. The 565 has sloppy steering and is hard to back up any where.
