going to look at a JD-670 rake ??? is how old are they ..what to look for and what dose duel hitch mean thanks cdv

670 Rake was introduced by Deere in the Fall of 1974 as a 1975 model. They were produced several years beginning in 1975. The 660 and 671 were also introduced at the same time. 660 and 670 were both Left-Hand Delivery Rakes. 671 was a Right-Hand Delivery Rake. 660 had an 8 1/2' Raking Width. 670 and 671 had 9 1/2' Raking Width. All 3 rakes came standard with a semi-integral drawbar hitch and included a jack. For an extra cost, you could have added a front gauge wheel with a 15" implement tire. Steel Tine Teeth or Rubber-Mounted Teeth were available. I would guess very few were ordered with steel tine teeth, since the rubber-mounted teeth were better for severe conditions. Don't know about a "duel hitch," but Deere offered a Tandem Hitch so that you could pull a 670 and a 671 side by side to rake two windrows or swaths together in one pass. This series of rakes were excellent in their day and still very good today, especially for a small square baler. If you are looking for a rake to provide a large windrow for a large round or large square baler, these may not do as well as a bigger wheel rake (for a lot more money). Check rake teeth, bars and all wear parts to see how much more you'll need to spend after you buy the rake.

Check rubber mounted teeth by pulling teeth toward back and look for cracks(a five bar has around 100 teeth). If it has a front wheel look for wear in the casting or shaft, also look for broken bolts or worn holes where casting bolts to frame.

Put rake in gear and turn it backward if it does not stop after a ways the dogs inside the gear case are worn and need building up or new ones installed. Jack up back wheels, wheels should turn backward without shaft turning with a clicking sound and not turn forward without shaft turning also check bearing while you have it jacked up.

Pay special attention where the rake bars fasten to the 2 drums that the bolts/bearings have not been run loose and worn the holes in the drums and worn out bearings

On height adjustment rods check threads. Check all four drive u-joints

I completely took apart a 640 (meaning down to the last bolt) fixed or replaced all parts, sanded, applied rust stopper and repainted. I also have a 670 that I repaired, they are in the most part the same rake and work well.
