Kuhn GMD 600 II Mower Setup Use

In the orchard I am running this year they have a Kuhn GMD 600 II disc mower for keeping the open areas mowed. The mower is not in bad shape, but is not in great shape either. Owners manual is of course MIA and the mower is not mounted on a tractor at the moment. I am going to run it with a John Deere 2555 or 2550 tractor. Just looking for any general set up or maintenance tips. Knives/blades look good and like they were recently replaced. Do most of you with this mower run a regular top link or a set of chains like on a hammer mower? Anyone have a source for a manual online? Local dealer seems to think it will take a month plus to obtain one. Thanks!

I don't run a Kuhn, but I'd run a proper toplink, not a chain.

Last thing you want is the cutter bar digging slightly on rough ground, and then tipping forward on the chain, and the cutter bar wanting to "trip" on the breakway, but since the mower is now off horizontal, it twists/breaks something instead.....

TOPLINK!!!!!! No exceptions. It'll roll over on the tractor otherwise.
Maintenance... change the blades as they get bent or worn off. Flip them over to renew the edge. Change the oil in the bar and bevel gearbox once a year and make sure they aren't leaking... Grease the shaft. That's about all you ever do to a GMD.

The guy who used to run the orchard ran chains as toplinks on almost everything. He would blast holes in plate steel to make end plates. Got a new toplink on the way from John Deere.

I know for a fact there is some oil leaking from the far end of the cutter bar. I am going to pressure wash it this weekend and get in there and see what is up. Of course it has at least a whole seasons worth of rotted grass on it which I am sure is not helping anything. Is it a seal in there to keep from leaking?

Thanks.

There are seals on every bearing, their retainers, the outer circumference of the deck has a large o-ring sandwiched between the top and bottom half. Also beware that they bottom pan sometimes wears thin and cracks at the outer end... Big job to take it apart.
