new holland 271 leaking behind flywheel

Looking for some info about new to me 271 hayliner. The flywheel can be moved forward and back about 1/8" and there is grease leaking by where the shaft comes out that attaches to the flywheel.

Is this a thrust bearing? Can it just be tightened up\ adjusted?

Thanks,

Warren

I can't answer your question directly, but if you go to New Holland's website they have some great parts diagrams of their balers - which you can
download as PDF's, save and print. The info on the bearing and shaft seal would be there. Most of the NH bearings and seals I've found can be
crossed to SKF or Timken, etc.

Good luck,
Bill

There is always a little bit of grease that squeezes out of that space when I grease my NH balers. I think that is just a brass bushing.

Well the problem isn't a little grease, I would have to look again but as I recall it's gear lube leaking out not grease. plus the fact that I can pull forward on the flywheel and it will move about 1/8".

I was wondering if tightening the bolt on the flywheel will take up the slack/play before I take it off to inspect.

I'll look up the parts list see if I can find out something there.

Thanks,

Warren

I'm not familiar with that model, but I'm assuming the shear bolt is right there. Check to see if there's any play in the bolt. I went through the same panic you are when I found the flywheel on my NH 68 moving just as you describe. It was a bad shear bolt.
