Lilliston mower/chopper.

I have two older Lilliston 7.5' choppers. The bearings are getting loose on the beater one so I went to adjust them and instead of a big adjusting nut like my other(older?) one this one only has a collar over the bearing and it is spot welded to the spindle shaft. These are heavy duty arbors with automotive type opposing Timken bearings. At first I thought mebbe the threads had stripped and the collars were a quick and dirty fix. I cut the welds and took one apart and it is definitely designed like this. I rebuilt the one and clamped it tight then spot welded the collar back on.

The other arbor units the bearings feel smooth they just need taken up like adjusting a wheel bearing but again, instead of a nut there is just a collar holding the bearings in place. I hope I got the design explained so one can understand. My thinking is that surely something built this rough could not be intended to be disposable/replaceable. Do not most opposing taper bearings need periodic adjustment? In thinking about this I cannot come up with a way to alter these so as to be adjustable.
Anybody have experience to share? Ideas?
