john deere 350 mower

Okay so I found a pretty good deal I think on a john deere 350 sickle mower. It is 7ft cut. The man has owned it 25 years and said all it needs is a belt and also he said where the cutter bar locks in with a lynch pin is broke off but it still holds it up. He said it needs to have and eyelet welded so you can pin it. Im not familiar with this mower so im not sure. So it will be going on a 3020 john deere. My question is about the chain to my drawbar. Will that work well with my sized tractor. He ran it with a 870 john deere. He wants $500 cash. It looks good, is it worth it?? what do I need to look out for. Thanks

The eyelet and lynch pin are only used for transport of the cutterbar in the vertical position.

Move knife with sections to the middle of the stroke. Then turn the lower flywheel back and forth to see if there is any looseness (dead movement) in the wobble parts.

The 350 will work well with your 3020! Price seems very reasonable. I would like to find one for $500.

My cousin has one. Runs it off a 706. If it can stand up to the high altitude 'hard' mountain grass of 8000 ft Gunnison Co. you will have no issues.Sounds like a good deal.

Take a look at the photo below of the drive head yoke and lift strap.

The yellow rectangle shows where the linchpin locks the lift strap.

I have broken this same piece twice and it is not a major problem to repair.

The cutter bar will fold over into travel position once the mower is raised.

Take a look at the photo below of the chain that secures the pivot arm to the drawbar.

Note the chain that secures the pivot arm to the main frame.

We have four 350 sickle mowers and I would buy another if one could be found for $500.

As mentioned below by [b:654c4848f0]Roger in Iowa[/b:654c4848f0], turn the flywheel back and forth to see if there is any looseness (dead movement) in the wobble parts.

Make sure the cutter bar is not bent or cracked.

Make sure the mower has both pieces of the powershaft; especially the tube and yoke assembly to the mower.

Take a look at the photo below of the tube and yoke assembly to the mower.

There is a splined drive shaft that connects the yoke to mower and drive sheave.

Make sure that both ends of the spring have not been broken and re-welded.

Make sure the tilt screw and/or tilt lever is not bent or broken.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the info James. Also I forgot to mention but this has been welded. Looks like its where the toplink goes. Not sure if that affects price much tho?

Looks like it has been welded and re-enforced on both sides; should not cause any problems with the mobility of the top link.

You might consider asking the owner how it got broken.

Yeah I will ask him. I'm going to look at it in the morning and also a new Holland 451 mower for $500 as well. Kinda a tough choice. I like the 350 mower and the 451 has good reviews as well. I just want one that fits my tractor with no issues and cuts about 70 acres twice a year. Thanks for the advice guys!
