New Holland 900 or Gehl 1275

I am looking at replacing our Gehl 1060 and was wondering if anybody had opinions on weather to buy a New Holland 900 or a Gehl 1275. The
1275 is $1000 more. I have good dealer support for both, and know parts availability could be a issue some time in the future for the Gehl. Also
any idea for power requirement on the 1275. My big tractor is a international 1086. Thanks Mark

I would get the NH. Gehl are the poorest built forage harvesters ever made. Once you have something else you will wonder why you ever had a Gehl.Maybe even look at a 230 or 240 NH as they are the chopper of choice if you have big horsepower. I like the Deere harvesters we have but my next choice would be NH. Gehl has almost no resale value anymore in my area. Tom

I went from a Gehl 1285 to a brand new FP 240 New Holland. What a joke. It wont handle the power of my JD 8330 nor does it have the capacity of the Gehl 1285. The FP 240 wont even get an 18ft box full to the top. I tried a JD chopper and twisted it in half. They are very well built but wont handle high horsepower.

Owning both a 1285 Gehl and a 240 NH, both are of similar capacity, although it seems like the gehl will handle more. Gehl had a more rugged chopper at the end than either NH or Deere, but the head design, with the exception of the 1240 Gehl pickup, were from the 1970s.

NH will have better parts support going forward, but I have nothing good to say about the 900. Back when I was in college, I worked for a dairyman who managed to twist the input shaft of the main gearbox off multiple times on a 900 chopping corn- with a 200 hp tractor. How's that for reliability? Happened twice, on a different machine each time.

What are you looking to chop? Hay or corn? If you are doing corn, make sure you get something with a kernel processor.

Buy the best you can afford- what shade of red paint will matter less than the condition either is in.

Gehl made a good chopper but they have quit the ag equipment market. Skid steers and construction equipment is the new direction. So the Gehl choppers are selling for scrap price around here as many common parts on relatively new choppers are not available. So go with the NH or some other brand of chopper that you can get parts for.
