Gear Lube Question

Probably a dumb question, but will 85W140 gear lube be OK for something that originally used straight 140 lube? OM for 24T baler
specifies SAE140 for the gear case, but that's nearly impossible to find these days. Thanks.

I would say no. 85w140 is an oil of 85 weight supposedly with the lubricating properties of 140 weight. Its much thinner than what the original designer specified.
Some early cars specify 140 weight "steam oil", which is so thick you have to push it through the funel with a dowel.

Been using that for years....140 is almost impossible to find, especially in smaller than 55 gal drums.

Lucas makes 140 w GEAR OIL. It's a synthetic racing gear gear oil.

And they stock it at my local Oreillys. Talk to your local parts store, they can order it

There is a gallon of 140 weight GL-1 on ebay for $ 9.99+$27.00 shipping.
Ebay and Amazon are good sources.
