NH-268 vs JD-336 pros and cons

Hi I currently own a John Deere 336 with a Pan thrower on it and have someone who wants to trade for a NH 268 with a belt thrower that has a lot of new parts and is really a nice solid baler. I have not yet baled with my 336 but I do know the original owner and he has showed me how well it works but I do know it has baled a lot of hay since it was new in 1982. Which baler essentially is what I'm trying to figure out here? Thanks

Iv got a JD 346 and would not trade it for any NH baler, JD makes such nice uniform square and tight bales, iv seen so many curved goofy looking bales out of my friends NH 315 or 316 baler. JD seems like a much simpler baler too, the feeding system ect. I'd keep the JD 336. Just my opinion.

From what I can tell, the NH 268 was made from 1963 to 1968 and the JD 336 was made from 1971 to 1980. All things being equal, were it me, I'd stick with the JD.

Good luck,
Bill

RUN! A worn out JD baler is better than any NewHolland....Steve. Former owner of both JD and NH balers.

336 is a higher capacity baler than a 268. The thrower on the NH will be less complicated than the kicker on the JD. I have used both and I would go with the 336. Simpler feeding system as well on the JD.

I wouldn't trade a much newer baler for a much older one for love nor money. And FWIW, JD seems to make a better bale. Not that NH can't, it just seems easier with JD for whatever reason. The only downside to the JD might be the pan thrower, but I know a lot of people who use pan throwers with zero complaints.

Interesting side note:
New Holland also used a pan kicker for a number of years in the '80s & '90s. Refer to model 75 & 77 throwers. I ran a 315 with pan kicker for a number of years.

The Deere will hands down make a better bale... It's probably not quite as fast a baler... but the bales maintain better shape as they are fed properly regardless of feed rate.

My first question would be how much are you going to bale? The 268 was a good small capacity baler, I helped pay for college bailing with one. But if you will be bailing a few thousand bales, the 268 may not be the best choice As for the JD, I have had a different experience with the neighbors JD 336, sometimes it bales like a champ, but at other times it is prone to banana bales and miss-ties, all during the same day. One thing in the JD is newer, so I think it would be worth more than a straight up trade.
