help identify this row planter

The rear closure wheels are solid and marked JD. All I know about this is that it was originally a 7 row planter, and cut down into a 2 row. Can anyone help me identify model? Any information about this thing will be greatly appreciated.

The parallel linkage setup, down-pressure spring, and bearing cap on the disk opener tell me Oliver. Maybe a model 340 planter unit. Somebody had a reason to put JD press wheels on it.

Tim...how about an oliver 540 row planter?...thank you for your help, and if anyone can tell me more about oliver 540 planters Id be greatful!

According to AGCO parts that number bottom is for the older Oliver-specific steel plates which are NLA new. There was a different bottom for use with the John Deere style plastic plates. I think you need a toothed knocker wheel instead of the round one for sorghum.

540 planters drove all the units through a sprocket and chain transmission off of the transport/lift wheels. They were limited in the number of rows and row spacings that could be accommodated. The 340 row units used mostly the same parts but drive individually from each presswheel. You could put any combination of them at whatever spacing you wanted on a toolbar.

But all is not lost! If you can find some complete hoppers from a 543 Oliver or White planter that use the John Deere B-series plastic plates, they should go right on there and you're good to go.
